VIDEO PRODUCTION
Born from the need for a creative outlet during the height of the pandemic, Firebase Prime is my YouTube gaming channel. While the channel itself hasn’t performed as much as I would have liked, it has pushed forward my web development capabilities in ways that I never would have suspected, as eventually, the channel needed a website. Over time, that website has become a test-bed for building and testing new features and plugins, whether it be the custom events widget at the top right of every page, the custom events calendar system feeding it, or the custom OBS integration that renders the upcoming and future events widgets seen on my occasional livestreams.
Its a perfect case study on why you should apply your work to your hobbies, as, in the course of normal client work, I never would have had an excuse to build the things that I built for Firebase Prime. And the lessons learned from building those things provided insights that continue to inform the work I do today.

Videos, events, and prop-building projects are powered by custom post types, taxonomies, and a wide array of post-type-specific custom fields, ensuring each type of content is displayed in the most effective and contextually relevant way.
A custom event system was implemented to support in-game events and streaming schedules, with support for recurring events. Active events are displayed in an event widget in the website’s nav and in-stream via the website-generated OBS overlay.
Dynamic content, including event notifications and introductory content loaded into the front page banner, are added client-side via a custom loader, maintaining maximum cache-ability.
An OBS overlay endpoint was created to display a carousel of in-game current events, upcoming events, and social media accounts (as configured on the website). The overlay can be seen under the webcam feed in the screengrab below.

Firebase Prime’s video catalogue is available on the website as a sortable video library, with filters available to sort video by series, game, and type (produced content, livestreams, or both). Each video has it’s own page, making it possible to include detailed notes and information that otherwise wouldn’t be possible to adequately convey through YouTube video descriptions.
